Opportunities for Autistic Pupils “Limited”

The chief executive of the National Autistic Society has said that two-thirds of families with autistic children find their choice of school limited by a lack of appropriate placements in their local area.

Commenting in the press on a case in which a local education authority (LEA) specified a school 30 miles from home, Mark Lever said: “It strikes me as wholly unfair that parents of children with autism have to fight so hard to get the education that should be their child’s right…. It is absolutely vital that a diverse range of provision is available, including special and mainstream schools, and schools with specialist autism resources.”

If you are having difficulty in securing a satisfactory school placement for a child with special needs, you need to understand what your rights are and how to enforce them. We can advise and would be pleased to help.
