An awards night to remember for Oliver

Legal Aid Lawyer Finalist 2010 - Social and Welfare

Oliver Studdert has been recognised as one of the UK’s most gifted lawyers by being named a runner up in the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards 2010.

Oliver is a real champion of the legal rights of young people and has worked tirelessly on some landmark cases. He also works with many charities and organisations to help protect vulnerable client groups and has a commitment to ensuring that children with disabilities and Special Educational Needs can access the education they are entitled to.

Following the awards ceremony, Oliver said:

"The LALY awards evening was a great success. It was very humbling to be in a room with so many extraordinary legal aid lawyers whose lists of achievements over the last few decades are phenomenal. It was truly inspirational to hear the stories of the cases of the short listed solicitors which really demonstrated to all those present, including the new Attorney General, why it is that the work legal aid lawyers is so important. Without good solicitors to do this work, the most vulnerable people in our society will be left without the help they need to change their lives."

"Everyone I spoke to after the awards felt a renewed feeling of passion, belief and determination to fight against the forthcoming cuts to the legal aid budget and in ensuring that this valuable work continues. Kathy Meade, who won the Social and Welfare category in which I was shortlisted, was thoroughly deserving of the award. She spoke of the fantastic work that legal aid funds, giving examples of the people that she has been able to help, as recently as 30 minutes before the ceremony. "

"Michael Mansfield QC, winning an award for outstanding achievement, spoke about legal aid having been set up as the second pillar in our society alongside the NHS in post war Britain and how important it is to fight to make sure that our civil liberties, which the new coalition government recognise as being so important, can be protected by ensuring the availability of legal aid to all of those who need it. We are very lucky at Maxwell Gillott to have a team of great and dedicated lawyers and I know that we will look to do all we can to protect legal aid and those it is designed to assist."

Also attending the awards with Oliver was MG Law Partner Angela Jackman who said: "The calibre of candidates who were shortlisted with Oliver was exceptionally high and they were significantly more senior than him. This demonstrates the extent of Oliver's achievement which was rightly recognised by the judging panel in short listing him. "

We all congratulate Oliver on his success and know that, with his commitment and dedication, the best is yet to come in his career.
