Julie Cornes
Julie specialises in advising clients and enforcing their Community Care and Health law rights. Having qualified as a solicitor in 1999 after a career in the theatre in Paris, Julie became a Solicitor Advocate in 2005. Julie sits part time on the Asylum Support and Social Security Tribunals.
Prior to joining Maxwell Gillott, Julie worked for a number of years at Bindman and Partners, where she specialised in Immigration and Asylum law. As a result of her increasing interest in representing disabled and elderly clients, she then joined Fisher Meredith LLP, where she developed a niche practice in this area.
With the reaffirmed commitment made by the coalition government to ensuring that all disabled and elderly people have access to an Individual Budget, to enable them to live as independently as possible in their own homes, Julie has developed a strong interest in advising people to assert their rights and obtain that to which they are legally entitled. Julie has successfully negotiated with local authorities and Primary care trusts on behalf of clients, to find creative solutions to difficult cases, often avoiding the need for lengthy and stressful litigation.
Julie has successfully represented clients and their families in appeals to obtain free personal care at home and in residential care. In a number of cases, she has secured significant financial payments for clients.
Julie is an accredited member of the Law Society’s Mental Health Panel and, aside from representing detained patients, is regularly instructed by the Official Solicitor in relation to health and welfare disputes, in the Court of Protection. Julie’s most recently reported case is LD, KD & another v Havering [2010] WTLR 69 (His Honour Judge Michael Horowitz QC, 19 October 2009). This report is highlighted in the Court of Protection 2009 Report as a key decision in the development of the jurisdiction of the Court of Protection under the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
Julie advises national organisations and charities working on behalf of the elderly and disabled, such as “In Control” and “The National Centre of Independent Living”.
