Many parents are extremely concerned to make sure their child gets into the right school at Reception. However, if you are not given the place you want, it can be difficult to be successful at appeal. This is because there are strict rules saying that there can be no more than 30 children per qualified teacher in a class unless there are exceptional circumstances. Also some parents do not realise that their child will not automatically progress from the Nursery department to Reception; if they want them to continue at the same school they will have to make an application for a place.
If a school already has 30 children in a class, an appeal can only succeed you can show either that the admissions arrangements or the law were not applied properly and the child would have been offered a place if they had been, or if the decision was totally unreasonable. Although most parents would see a refusal to accept their child as unreasonable this argument rarely applies. If you have not been given a place at the school you want and think that these criteria apply to your situation we can investigate the matter and assist with an appeal.
